In an era when developers are searching for ways to bring deeper meanings to their games, some turn to politics, ethics, religion, or philosophy. But it takes an auteur with a "singular" vision to make a truly unique statement, and that statement is... "We ran out of money."

Deadly Premonition 2

Experience the sequel that you never expected and also maybe didn't need, as the game developer/actual Buddhist priest known as SWERY unleashes the follow-up to his cult classic Deadly Premonition, a game beloved for its insane story and characters, despite the fact that it kind of played and looked like ass, with a sequel that checks every box you could possibly expect it to, featuring: a small town full of lunatics with fanatical obsessions; a supernatural murder story that's pretty much the same one as the first game; tedious fetch quests clearly designed to pad out the length; hilariously bad combat; running like absolute dogsh*t; basically never making sense; and, of course, long, rambling monologues about how awesome movies are.

Francis York Morgan: --Owen Wilson and Ice Cube were in it. Is that an all-star cast or what?

Honestly, these are almost worth the twenty bucks on their own. What's that? THIS GAME IS $50?! Uhh... Okay, maybe I gotta rethink that...

Discover the sights and sounds of small-town Louisiana, as you explore Le Carré in all the glorious fidelity of the PS2 era, following leads given to you in visions by the bad guy from The Princess and the Frog, that will take you to various locations you'll have to wait in front of until they open, while you smoke time cigarettes like you're Venom Snake, until you have to fill your Hunger, Sleep, Hygiene, or Suit Cleanliness Meters at the hotel. Then, hop on your skateboard and watch as the frame rate drops into single-digits, and York launches into the same monologue about bridges for the 48th time...

Francis York Morgan: (while skateboarding) Lift bridges are truly a rarity. Reminds me of Duluth, Minnesota. Remember what happened there? That man went to such great lengths to collect his victim's tongues...

...while you realize you can't actually complete the next story step because you need to buy... beans, but the lady doesn't sell the beans until Monday and it's f*cking Wednesday, so you either have to spend all that time figuring out the poorly-described side quests and skipping stones, or hope you've grinded up enough cash to pay for forcing York into a week-long coma, as Deadly Premonition 2 continues its predecessor's tradition of aiming for a GTA-style open world experience, but only the parts where your cousin asks you to stop what you're doing and go bowling.

Roman Bellic: (on the phone) Let's go bowling.

Unravel the roots of the Saint Rouge mystery, in another of SWERY's trademark blends of Hideo Kojima, David Lynch, and absolutely no editors, as Deadly Premonition 2 mixes a current-day frame story where Zach -- who is also York; just roll with me here -- recalls his first run-in with a supernatural drug to two FBI agents, wherein York meets a bunch of complete weirdos who explain the reason for living to him in great detail, before getting blood-sacrificed, turned into monsters, or some combination of both, and York discovers all the details to the mystery through nonsensical magical powers that in no way resemble actual detective work, until that somehow leads you to the next murder scene, in a narrative that's exactly what you signed up for when you knowingly purchased this product: rambling, intricate, and batsh*t insane. Isn't that right, Zach?

Francis York Morgan: Insanely fantastic!

Reluctantly dive into Deadly Premonition 2's revised combat system, where you'll hone your skills by awkwardly shooting dogs and squirrels in the face, so you can trade their skulls for completely useless voodoo upgrades, before heading into one of the game's handful of ghost dungeons, all of which take place in the same nondescript house, where you'll fight up to three whole types of strange phantom harlequin, and collect eight million items you'll never need to use, until you eventually run into the boss fight which will challenge your ability to press the right trigger a bunch, in combat that feels so stiff and unpleasant that it'll make you miss the fetch quests. Maybe next time, SWERY can just write a blog about movies he likes? I mean, I'd donate to his Patreon.

Francis York Morgan: "Videodrome." 1982, directed by David Cronenberg. At the time, it was seen as a hard movie to digest for normal moviegoers, but now it's become a cult classic.

So sit down with a hot cup of coffee, and get ready to experience a deadly premonition... of what can happen when a game's reach far, far exceeds its grasp, and truly tests the limits of what fans will go through to support something unique. And by "unique", I mean "exactly like the first one".

Francis York Morgan: Well, Zach, that was anticlimactic.

Starring: Double Dale Cooper (Jeff Kramer as Francis York Morgan and Francis Zach Morgan); April Gadget (Cassandra Lee Morris as Patricia Woods); LAANNNNA (Mela Lee as Aaliyah Davis); Paul Pizzamatti (Chris Smith as Simon Jones); Mike Teevee (Ogie Banks as Melvin Woods); Questionable Racial Stereotype (Unknown as Houngan); Are You Winnin, Son? (David Lodge as P.J. Clarkson); Danny Mcbride (sic) (Ben Pronsky as Daniel Clarkson); Lenny (Armen Taylor as Avery Smith); Professor X Chromosome (Billy Kametz as Lena Dauman/Professor R); and Various Insane Yokels (John Eric Bentley as David Jawara, Morgan Berry as Raven Yahoo, and Kirk Thornton as The Mirror).

Don't Preorder 2: Do Better Than This, Guys

You know, as bad as this game is, this poorly-animated jazz is incredible. (Xavier Johnson playing a jazz number)
